Week Three- Post Three: Surrender Sheets

The Green Sheet

To surrender an animal means that a person or a family decides to bring in an animal to Wake County Animal Shelter. The person or family looses the rights to the animal and the animal becomes the property of the states. There are several reasons why people choose to surrender their animals.
This week I found three dogs with the green surrender sheets.

Harper

Animal ID: 71626

Harper's surrender sheet stated that the family dynamics had changed and she was too high energy for the family and they wanted her to go to a home where she would be able to be taken on daily walks.

Sandy

Animal ID: 71773

Sandy's surrender sheet stated that the family had moved to an apartment and the complex did not allow dogs.

Aakitah

Animal ID: 71785

Aakitah's surrender sheet also stated that the family had moved the an apartment complex.

As I walked around just looking at different animals surrender sheets I noticed a lot of the animals were surrendered because the families moved into apartment complexes. This might be because the economy is bad and many families needed to down-size and move into apartments complexes. I tried to put myself in those people's shoes and think about how it would feel to be laid off from a job and was forced to move into a complex. I'm sure it was very difficult for them to make the decision that surrendering their animal was what was best for their family and the animal itself.

  1. Lauren, I can relate to this blog post. I too tried to place myself in the shoes of the families who had to surrender their animals. I like that you reported on the surrender sheets and discussed surrendering without being judgmental. It was a nice touch to talk about the economy and down-sizing...great point! This post was very informational!

  2. It is hard not to be judgmental! I just know that I wouldn't want people to judge me if I was put in a tough position. I would want them to try and look at it from my point of view!

  3. These stories make me sad. For the animals and the families. Yes, we are living in hard times. It's not easy to have to downsize, but it is harder still to have to surrender a member of your family because there simply isn't room for them at your new home. I hope these animals can find good new forever homes. Thanks for sharing.

  4. This post makes me sad too. And I really struggle with the judgements. It is very true that I wouldn't want someone to judge me if I had to make a really tough decision. And then another part of me thinks, why can't they find an apartment that takes dogs? You never do know what someone is going through, or why they have to make the decisions they make. I will keep repeating your words of wisdom to myself—I do not want others to judge me. I will not judge them!
