Week Four- Post Two- Different Critter

Bunny Rabbits

I typically photograph dogs and sometimes cats.
Until today I had never attempted to photograph the little critter like the bunnies.

Some of the challenges I faced were:
Not knowing exactly how to handle the bunny.
I grew up with dogs and cats but never around bunnies. It felt a little uncomfortable holding the bunnies.
There was a lot of distracting objects in the cage.
The bunnies had grass in their cage. It was difficult to move the grass away and off of the bunny to get a good picture of them.
There was poor lighting.
The little critter room has poor lighting plus the bunnies were in the back of the cage. This made it difficult to get a good picture with enough light.

I learned:
The best way to photo graph the bunnies was to try and get them to the front of the cage where there was more light.
To move the grass away from the bunny and off of the bunny so less editing has to be done.

It was a good experience but I think I will stick to the animals that I am more comfortable with.

Week Three- Post Four: Responsible Pet Ownership

What Does Responsible Pet Ownership Mean?

My dogs Lucy (Rottie mix) and Moose (Chiweenie) would like to help share what we think responsible pet ownership means.

Owning an animal is a lifetime commitment. Make sure you can make that commitment before you decided to own a pet.

Do I fit your needs? Do you fit mine?

Make sure you pick an animal that fits your needs. Don't get a high energy animal if you don't want to exercise them and don't get an animal that isn't allowed where you are living. Dogs strive on companionship so don't make your dog "backyard dog". They need to be with their human pack. Make sure you are financially able to take care of a pet. Research costs before you go get a pet so you know the minimum of how much you will be spending a month. Consider the fact that your pet might get sick. How will you pay it?

Spay and Neuter us PLEASE!

Find your pet a good trust worthy vet and please make sure you spay or neuter your pet. There are so many homeless animals you don't want to add to the problem. Spaying and neutering your pets can also reduce the risk of ovarian and testicular cancers. That would save your pet from pain and save you a lot of money!

Mmm this pill bottle looks tasty...

Make sure your house if animal proofed. Animals can be very curious and want to taste things that seriously harm them. Make put away all cleaners, prescriptions, and deadly foods like chocolate are put up so the animals can get them. Also be aware of plants have could potentially be deadly to your animal.

Put me on a lease!

Make sure your dog is on a lease or in a fenced in area. Do not let your dog run at large. An animal running at large can get lost or be hit by a car. It is safer just to keep your pet on a leash that way you  have control.

Get me an ID tag

Make sure your pet has proper identification. If your pet ever gets away from you then they are more likely to find their way home if they have an ID tag or microchip.

Yummy Food

Feed your animals a highly nutritious meals. Be aware of what the food is made up of not all bagged pet foods are good for your animal. Educate yourself on what kind of food your pet needs.

I'm bored... I think I'll destroy this!

When animals get bored they sometimes become naughty. Make sure your are stimulating your dog not just physically but also mentally! Take them to obedience classes for a good brain work out and to get them socialized with other animals. If you want your pet to be fine in a certain situation then introduce them often to it while they are young. If you are planning on having children in the future take your pet to a place with children so you won't have an issue when the new family member comes along.

Just love me.

Animals want human companionship, treat your pet with respect because they deserve it. They are not able to speak so be their voice and advocate for what they need. Your pet will thank you for the responsible pet ownership that you display and it will be worth all the hard work you put into your pet!

On May 23, 2012 I ask a volunteer and a visitor what they thought responsible pet ownership was.

Anonymous volunteer at Wake County Animal Shelter stated with is what he thought responsible pet ownership was: "There is so much that goes into being a responsible pet owner. You need to be financially ready. You need to pick an animal that suits your needs, you need need to be willing to make the commitment to that animal. You need to look at there you are in life and make sure you are ready for that responsibility."
Anonymous visitor at Wake County Animal Shelter stated with is what she thought responsible pet ownership was: "Responsible pet ownership means you have to be committed to the animal and love them unconditionally. You need to care for them and have their welfare in mind"

Week Three- Post Three: Surrender Sheets

The Green Sheet

To surrender an animal means that a person or a family decides to bring in an animal to Wake County Animal Shelter. The person or family looses the rights to the animal and the animal becomes the property of the states. There are several reasons why people choose to surrender their animals.
This week I found three dogs with the green surrender sheets.

Harper

Animal ID: 71626

Harper's surrender sheet stated that the family dynamics had changed and she was too high energy for the family and they wanted her to go to a home where she would be able to be taken on daily walks.

Sandy

Animal ID: 71773

Sandy's surrender sheet stated that the family had moved to an apartment and the complex did not allow dogs.

Aakitah

Animal ID: 71785

Aakitah's surrender sheet also stated that the family had moved the an apartment complex.

As I walked around just looking at different animals surrender sheets I noticed a lot of the animals were surrendered because the families moved into apartment complexes. This might be because the economy is bad and many families needed to down-size and move into apartments complexes. I tried to put myself in those people's shoes and think about how it would feel to be laid off from a job and was forced to move into a complex. I'm sure it was very difficult for them to make the decision that surrendering their animal was what was best for their family and the animal itself.

Week Three- Post Two: Turn-over

Turn-over

I was actually really surprised and the turn-over rate at Wake County Animal Shelter. I was expecting that the turn-over rate would be low, but I found many of the dogs I had taken pictures of were no longer in the shelter. I found the dogs turn-over rate was higher than the cats and the turn-over rate for younger animals was higher than older animals.
In one room I was in there was only one dog that had not been adopted yet since my visit last week. I think some of the animals go to foster homes, are reclaimed, or are picked up by animal rescue groups, and many are adopted.
The cats on the other hand seem to have a lower turn-over. Both Prestone Animal ID: 71054 and Tigress Animal ID: 70163 are still waiting to be adopted. I think this is because there are so many kittens coming into the shelter right now it is harder for the older cats to get adopted.

Tigress

Animal ID: 70163

Prestone

Animal ID: 71054

 Rin

Animal ID: 69830
Rin as been at the shelter for 18 days. She is sweet, full of personality, and very energetic.
Her energy may be the reason why she has not found a home yet. When I first walked past Rin she was jumping and barking. One of the volunteers took Rin on a long run. When they can back Rin was much more mellow. She needs to find a home who understands her high energy and is able to give her the exercise she needs.

Week Three- Post One: Areas Of Improvement

Where Area's I Need Some Improvement

Imma Cutie
Animal ID: 70330

This photo of Imma Cutie was one of my least favorite photos that I took last week.
The main strength of this photo is that I was able to brighten his eyes using the dodge tool. I also adjusted the color so the gray in his fur stood out a little more. Lastly I was able to capture a calm, happy cat. He doesn't look scared or backed into a corner.
The AOI are that he was not looking at the camera and I was took close and didn't get his full ear. The background is also a little too distracting. I should have stood at an angle were he was behind the blank wall. Lastly I don't think he is perfectly in focus. He looks a little burry in this picture. I need to make sure that I am taking a breath before I am taking the picture to cut back on camera movement.
